We are the Tejas RC Association. Our club began in January of 1986. This is when several radio control enthusiasts met at the home of Steve Thompson in McAllen. At that time, we formed our current association which was named after the Spanish word for Texas. Our name is pronounced "Tay-Haus." Our club began with 40 original members who donated $200 in order to pave a 400' runway in west Mission, Texas.
Our club was comprised of local members and winter Texans. Our main focus has always been toward remote control model aviation with some members flying IMAA giant scale aircraft. We are chartered by the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) and the International Model Aircraft Association (IMAA). Our membership consists of both young and older pilots from throughout the Rio Grande Valley and many states. More than half of our current membership consists of Winter Texans who vacation with us in order to escape the cold winters of the northern USA. The Tejas club has a very active RC training group and offers free flying & building instruction to new & prospective members. The club is also an active consultant and co-sponsor for the Aeronautical Engineering lab flying team at nearby University of Texas Pan American, located in Edinburg, TX under the guidance of fellow club member and professor Dr. Kevin Lee. The Tejas RC Association hosts an "open-flying" Air Show every third week of January. This is an extremely popular event that is enjoyed by numerous valley spectators. We also have a yearly club members' "Appreciation Day" as a special THANKS for what our members do during the year. Club dues are $50 per year and regular meetings are scheduled the first Monday of every month. Many members and their family or guests arrive about 6PM to dine before the regular 7PM meeting. Meeting locations vary and are posted on the home page of this web site.
